Weekly Discussion Post - Week 4

Week #4 Discussion: Do you think there is a difference between 'good religion' and 'bad religion' as some of the students suggest in Ms. Singh's class? Why or Why not?

As a reminder, responses must be kept respectful and free of any discriminatory language.

  1. I do not entirely think that there is such thing as good or bad religion. Religion itself is not bad, but what religion can lead to bad things. For instance, ISIS says that it is trying to change the world in the name of Allah, the Muslim god. This is not a bad thing of religion, as most people who follow the Muslim faith do not agree with the aims and motives of ISIS. There are always people that do unspeakable things in the name of their God or a higher power. There are practices in religion that are bad, such as human sacrifice, but this is mainly in older religions of the past. If you go onto a random street and ask people if the world would be better without religion, some may answer that without religion, most wars would never have happened. Bot the majority will answer that without religion, the world would have been cold and lifeless. So, I think that there is no such thing as bad or good religion, but how people practice it is another thing.

  2. I don't think that there is a difference between 'good religion' and 'bad religion' because I think that religions shouldn't be classified as 'good' or 'bad' because everybody believes different things and everyone is allowed to have their own opinion and their own choice as to what they believe. Although some terrorists refer to their work being done in the name of their religion, I think that they are just crazy people who are part of that religion, but that is not the reason for them terrorizing. All religions are different, and I do not think that any religions should be seen as 'good' or 'bad'. In conclusion this is why I think that there is no difference between 'good religion' and 'bad religion' because there is no such thing.

We think yes and no. We think there is difference because there are some not so great religions (satanists) and there are some great religions. Some religions follow in the footsteps to change for the better meanwhile others might follow in the opposite footsteps. We think no because all religions have à god they follow, the gods might all be different but they are all gods

  4. In my opinion no religion is good or bad. Personally I don’t belong to any religion, which makes me quite neutral on this topic. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if you belong to a certain religion you will obviously think that your beliefs are superior to those of anyone else. Also, just because people do horrible things, doesn’t mean that the religion they belong to is horrible too. There are about 1.6 billion people in the world that belong to the Muslim faith, that’s almost 25% of the entire world. Are we seriously going to assume that a quarter of the world are bad people, simply because they belong to the Muslim faith.

  5. Yes, there is a difference because different religions and cultures could think that other religions that have people exposing their skin is bad and disrespectful. Kingdom Halls think churches give out the wrong information. Good religion would be believing in your religion. Even though some religions will make you think that other cultures or religions are bad you shouldn't call them a terrorist or anything mean. Just because we have different culture we are all human. Good religion would be being human and still believe in your religion

  6. There is no bad religion but it can sometimes be bad when people form opinions when they have no knowledge of what the person believes. This can start wars and is how racial stereotypes are created. But it can also be good because it shows that they are not ashamed of their religion.

    1. I really agree with your comment Flynn,Matt and Natasha you should never assume something about someone just because of their religion and that if someone is willing to fight for their religion they have a really strong faith and that their not ashamed of their religion.

    2. I agree with Flynn Matt Natasha because if someone was Muslim and you seen on the news that Muslims have bombed a place you wouldn't want to be that kids friend because you might thing that all Muslims are bad so you think that religious is bad but that kid might be a really nice kid

What makes a good religion and what makes a bad religion. That’s the biggest question we could ask ourselves. And you have to think what is a good religion and what’s a bad religion, what defines that. Well in our 21st century perspective where you’d think we’d evolved past this, our view points have not changed. One group who are involved with a religion do one of the stupidest things and kill people. Then all of a sudden the media’s all over it labelling that religion as a “bad” religion and what does that define. Nothing, but to the vast population of America or Canada who read or watch this now believe that they are a giant group of terrorists in their eyes. You have to think Christianity probably started as just that a religion, then some greedy person who believes in Christianity decides that that should be the almighty religion and anything below it should be obliterated or conformed to the almighty supremacy of Christianity. Yet we look at that and we realized nobody hated them or nobody labelled as a terrorists their viewpoint was accordingly just in their eyes. If you look at history giant massacres directed towards a religion happen but nobody realise that, and they just continue to blindly march into the labelling and racism. So now we ask the final question what defines a good religion or bad religion in your mind?

  8. I believe that there aren't good or bad religions, I believe that all religions are equal. Some people think that Jews are evil and they should be killed, as hitter did. Because of discrimination against Jews and Muslims people believe that Jews are the cause of the loss of world war 1 by hitler and he wanted to kill them off. But with Muslims, it was 9/11 when people started to think all Muslims are terrorists and because of this Muslims started to be discriminated against and are being treated poorly. People have burned down a mosque and some Muslims have been thrown stuff at them and it is not ok. Just because of these things, people think there are good and bad religions but in reality, it is just people's perspective of things. In conclusion, all religions are equal and shouldn't be treated poorly.

  9. I agree with you Cole no one should be discriminated because of their religion or because they were born in a specific place. One thing I don't agree with is that it wasn't 9/11 that caused people to think all Muslims are bad its how the media covered the event. The media covered the event in a racist way with through time got over exagerated and that led to discrimination which then led to people thinking that all Muslims are bad. I also liked how you said "treated poorly" instead of more specific descriptions.

  10. In my opinion, I believe that there is a such thing as a good and bad religion. There are religions that kill others for pitiful reasons. For example, one religion will do such a deed for power, while the other does it for recognition... Fortunately, not every person in particular has the same ambition, however, people have the tendency to generalize a religion for whatever reason. If one or a few individual(s) has done a sin, then there will be an assumption that everyone else in the category will do the exact same, which I believe is a mistreated idea. Some believe that sacrifices must be made as an offering to the gods, this is their belief and you cannot change such a thing... Now a good religion would not clash with another for any specific reason, it is unexceptional to take innocent lives away for an excuse that is not relevant. A good religion would help those who are in need, instead of putting them in a disgraceful position. Why not try to put yourself in a poor individual's shoes and understand what they have to go through in their everyday lives...
So this is what I believe about the two types of religions, and this is just an opinion of mine, I hope this will not affect you, the peer who is reading this explanation, in any way.

  11. (Edited) There is no such thing as a good or bad religion! Only the people are mistreating it! Terrorists use the name of god before committing a sin, people kill others for no valid explanation. The religion is there to guide the believers into the right passage, not leading them to a path of carnage. No one should use the name of god before doing a crime, it is forbidden to do such a thing! Why do people do horrible things like this in the first place? Because it was their final decision, the ultimatum! Individual groups do such taboo deeds... One group kills others due to racism, another takes innocent lives for god. These are bizarre missions created by the founder of the groups, but I wonder why so? The goal of a person's life is to help those who are in need as much as possible, not do the exact opposite!

  13. I agree with you Rachel. I agree that even though you are part of a religion but you have your own opinion and make your own decisions. Not everyone is good or bad. I agree that we judge people and religions based on things we hear in the media. Example, Muslims, a lot of people think they are bad people just because of Muslim extremists but there are good Muslims. There are good people in every religion, no matter what the media says. Not everything you see on the news is true.
