Weekly Discussion Post - Week 5

Week #5 Discussion: There is an argument between Zana and her mother about wearing religious clothing. Do you think it is a good idea for people to wear religious clothes? Why or why not? Do you know of cases where people are prejudged because of religious clothing?

  1. As a matter of fact, there is nothing to be ashamed of for wearing religious clothing. People should embrace about their origin, a woman has the decision to either wear or not wear the hijab, but some females are forced to cover themselves from the outside world. The Taliban, an extremist group, enforced women to wear the burka at all costs. The burka has the capability to cover the entire body of a woman, top to bottom, which is a disgusting law... It is true that the beauty of Islamic women who wear the niqab is the eyes, but some would like to express their beauty from a visual perspective. I know women who are being judged as extremists because of their religious clothing, to me that made a loss in faith of humanity... Zana must continue to pursue her ambition of wearing whatever she pleases, but unfortunately her own family discourages her from wearing Islamic clothes, but that will not stop her!

  3. I think it's a bad and good idea to wear religious garments/clothes. I think it's a good idea because you're supporting your religion/group, which isn't a bad thing. But I also think it's a bad idea because people may have bad conceptions of your religion, and since your wearing clothes related to your religion, they may react in a bad way. This is how hate crimes happen. In the book, Zana was ridiculed for her wearing her religious garments. Jay had said to her, "nice costume" and Kevin called her a "sand monkey".
